Designed as a 3 – part series with a discussion and then a hands-on section:
1. Introduction to Herb Gardening: April 16th
We will visit the herb garden at the museum (weather permitting) and discuss growing herbs. We will talk about various garden bed designs from containers, to raised beds, and creating a sacred medicine wheel garden. Harvesting, storing, and using herbs will also be covered. In the hands-on section, you will make your own tincture. There will be samples of various tinctures to try. A handout with common herbal terms and some easy common herbs that you may want to have in your garden for your own herbal first aid kit and health and wellness.
2. Kitchen Herbs – Myth, Magic, Folklore and Uses: April 23rd
We will look at some of your common favorite kitchen herbs and their magic and folklore. Herbal history includes many traditional, medicinal, historical, and downright shocking uses! We’ll also go over how to grow these low maintenance herbs, how to use them, and simple recipes for your own health and wellness. There will be sampling of easy to make recipes and a discussion of food as medicine. Handouts will include these and even more kitchen herbs for health and wellness, and how to “get to know” an herb to help you choose the best remedy. In this class you will have the opportunity to make your own infused vinegars, infused oils, and even put together your own spice mix.
3. Wild Edibles & Foraging (aka “Eat Your Lawn”): April 30th
This will be an introduction to various common local herbs used for healthy living that you can find just out your door in your lawn and surrounding area. We’ll talk about some of the stories and ways that the ancestors used these herbs and how modern herbalists use them. There will be sampling of various easy to make recipes with spring herbs. Handouts will include some wonderful herbs that grow around you and recipes. In this class we will learn to make elderberry syrup, salves, and infused honey.
Classes will be presented by Janis Fallon: herbalist, Master Gardener, Engineer and Environmental Attorney. She has done several apprenticeships with Rosemary Gladstar of Northern Vermont, for several decades enjoyed making herbal remedies for friends and family, and teaching people about herbs.
